H5P Tools Reflection

I believe that the H5P Tools could be effectively used in any grade or any subject as long as the educator understands how it can be used and the wide range of options that they could use. For my hopeful grade range, 1-3, I believe these tools could be used to improve retention and engagement for students. Interactive videos are a great way to deliver information to students and allows for educators to include quiz questions for the class to answer together, visuals to support the information, and other imbedded activities the students will enjoy. Interactive tools are not the only tool of H5P that would be able to be used within a grade 1-3 classroom. The other options within H5P which educators could use within their classrooms include, charts, math quizzes, agamotto, crosswords, dialog cards, find the words, and so many more. Many of these tools could be used within literacy, language, math, socials, or science lessons. H5P tools could allow for a large amount of interactivity within the classroom as a whole group or be done by students independently and could allow children to work at their own pace and make sure they understand the content before moving on. In summation, if the educator understands how to effectively use H5P tools, the options for how it could be used within a classroom are endless.

How Could Video or Audio Editing be Used as the Assignment Medium for Subject?

Audio or video editing could be used as an assignment medium for many subjects including, social studies, art, and science. Using science as an example, audio and video editing could be used in tandem with an experiment that the student must complete. This could be used in a chemistry unit where the students must create and film a chemical reaction and narrate over the footage explaining what they are doing and why the reaction is occurring. This would allow students to both engage with science, video editing, and audio editing, while solidifying their understanding of the concept they were assigned.

What Could You Do To Make the Assignment as Engaging as Possible?

The educator, as with any project, can make alterations to the assignment where they see fit to make it more engaging for their students. Options for making it more engaging could include things such as:

  • Allow them to choose their topic.
  • Encourage their curiosity.
  • Observation Notebooks.
  • Facts Board.

How Multi-Media Learning Theory can Help Create More Effective Tutorials

The multi-media learning theory can help educators, or anyone really, create much more effective tutorial videos. These tutorials which use the multi-media learning theory are more effective for this main reason:

  • They use two separate channels of information (Auditory & Visual).

This use of both auditory and visual information is essential for creating effective tutorials because each channel can only receive and retain a limited amount of information and by employing both channels it is much easier to retain the content. The multi-media learning theory also lays a framework for understanding and highlights the importance of learning as an active process which is based on prior knowledge of the student. Due to this understanding of how learning is done, the multi-media learning theory is essential for creating effective tutorials.

Flipped Classroom Teaching Model

A flipped classroom teaching model is one where the traditional classroom model is flipped. The students are given access to all the learning materials in this model and it is their duty to work through the content and have group meetings where they discuss the content. This classroom model allows for the educator to act as more of a support for the students education rather than dictate material to them. A flipped classroom in the grades 1-3 could be used but the teacher would have to be careful as to remain on top of their students learning and discussions.

Strengths:

  • Give children more ownership and autonomy over their work.
  • Allow children who exceed expectations to work ahead slightly.
  • Allows teachers to focus more on children who require more assistance.
  • Students who are unable to attend will not fall behind.
  • More communication between peers and teacher.
  • Encourages engagement and collaboration.

Weaknesses:

  • Requires more preparation for educator.
  • Wifi or Tech requirements may not be the same for all students.
  • Can be a more sedentary learning environment.
  • Content confusion.
  • Not all material will be free.
  • Students who struggle could fall behind.
