Since my last free inquiry blog post I have been working on how to best narrow my topic from “film” to an aspect of film which I could focus on. I have been able to narrow my topic to film editing. Throughout the semester I hope to be able to explore the ways in which different types of scenes are edited, the intention of the editor, and the effect that editing technique has on the viewer.
My current ideas of types of editing within scenes are: (A good example of each)
- Dialogue Scenes (I’m Thinking of Ending Things [2020] by Charlie Kaufman: bonedog peom from i’m thinking of ending things – YouTube)
- Fight Scenes (Oldboy [2003] by Park Chan Wook: Oldboy The Corridor Fight Scene – YouTube)
- Walking/Movement (The Darjeeling Limited [2007] by Wes Anderson: The Darjeeling Limited, opening scene (This Time Tomorrow – The Kinks) – YouTube)
- Scene Transitions (Insert Shots by The Coen Brothers: How the Coen Brothers Shoot Insert Shots (Insert Shot Examples from The Big Lebowski) – YouTube)
- War/Battle (Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers [2002] by Peter Jackson: Lord of the rings: Two Towers | Battle of Helmsdeep HD – YouTube)
- Audio? (Raging Bull [1980] by Martin Scorsese: Raging Bull (9/12) Movie CLIP – You Never Got Me Down (1980) HD – YouTube)
I intend on attempting to find one more type of scene in which editing is essential for the emotion and feel of the film but currently I am unsure of the last one. If anyone has suggestions of types of scenes which I could focus on I am very open to suggestions.
